The 6th Annual Canstruction® Garners 12 Tons of Food for Hawaii Foodbank
Pearlridge Center Hosts Promotion Benefiting Hawaii Foodbank

The American Institute of Architects, Honolulu Chapter showcased "Canned Cinema-Dinner and a Movie!", the sixth Annual Canstruction® competition at Pearlridge Center. To help close “Hunger Action Month” in September, teams comprised of Hawaii’s best architecture firms, allied designers and engineering professionals designed and built structures using canned goods and other non perishable foods. The can structures were on display from September 24 through October 9 at Pearlridge Center's Uptown Center Court with all food donated to the Hawaii Foodbank. This year's competition collected a total of 23,415 pounds of food to feed Hawaii’s hungry!

The annual Canstruction® competition also gives kids opportunities to help other children in need. At this year’s event, keiki were asked to donate five cans of food to work with volunteer architects and build the "Hot Dawg!" (Hot Dog) out of cans of vienna sausage.

Another great part of Canstruction® this year was the "Scouting For Food" Drive in partnership with the Boy Scouts of America, Aloha Council. During the month of September, Scouts collected canned food in their neighborhoods to donate to the Hawaii Foodbank. Individual scouts who collected 100 cans or more received the inaugural "Scouting For Food" Drive patch. They collected over 4,200 cans of food to help feed Hawaii's hungry!

Members of the public were encouraged to vote for their favorite structure by donating one can of food representing one vote. After two weeks of voting, the winner of the “People’s Choice” award was Richard Matsunaga and Associates Architects, Inc. with 3,877 votes (cans). They constructed, “Release the KraCAN”, a pirate ship being attacked by the Kraken creature from the popular "Pirates of the Caribbean" series. The team with the “Most Pounds Donated” is team WATG with 3,663 pounds of food donated through their structure "CANfu Panda". Winners in other categories were:

§ Jurors’ Favorite: “Guess Who's Coming for Dinner!” (based on the movie, Monsters Inc.) by InSynergy Engineering, Inc.
§ Best Use of Labels: “Enter the Gateway to a Hunger-Free Hawaii” (based on the movie, Jurassic Park) by Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company, Inc.
